M-29 & I-94 Frequently Asked QuestionS
Drivers can expect continuous lane closures of M-29 (23 Mile Road) and I-94 for the duration of construction. At a minimum, one lane of travel in each direction will always be open.
Drivers will also see ramp closures of eastbound M-29 (23 Mile Road) to eastbound I-94 and of westbound M-29 (23 Mile Road) to westbound I-94 for a period during construction. During this period, a posted detour will be signed to utilize the 21 Mile Road Interchange for access to I-94.
The M-29 (23 Mile Road) Bridge over I-94 was originally constructed in 1963, received preventative maintenance work in 2002, and now requires further maintenance to keep up with its age.
In addition, sidewalk connections already exist on both sides of the interchange but stop at the I-94 ramp terminals. Dirt paths exist in various areas of the interchange, showing that pedestrian demand for a crossing already exists.
Furthermore, Chesterfield Township’s master plan calls out this corridor as a critical connector where sidewalk gaps need to be filled. As there are no other non-motorized connections across the freeway anywhere in the area, and this bridge is the only one in the area that can accommodate the addition of a sidewalk without widening the bridge, modifications to the bridge to allow for a sidewalk are being implemented.
